Sharing Bananas on the Autobahn
Hey everyone!
Sorry it's been so long since I've sent a weekly, I've definitely gotten out of the habit since being in the office.
Things are going super well though! I am now in my third transfer in the office and I know for sure that I will stay for a fourth. It's definitely weird knowing that I will have spent a fourth of my whole mission here, but I do love it! My companions are awesome, being in the center of the mission is cool, and it's a ton of fun!
This past week we got to go to 2 different zone conferences! There was one here in Munich on Monday and then one in Zürich on Wednesday, and then this coming Monday we will go to Salzburg for the last one. They have been awesome so far! President and Sister Naatjes spoke for a while at the beginning, then since Christmas is coming up, we did a scripture reading/song singing thing about the story of Christ's birth. Afterwards we did a talent/variety show which was wicked fun and then a white elephant gift swap thing. They were super fun and uplifting and it was awesome to get to travel around and see everyone from the mission! The funniest story about this whole week happened as we were driving home from the Swiss conference.
We got in the car at about 8pm with a 4 hour drive ahead of us, meaning that we were already going to get home at around midnight. We began our journey, and of course it began to snow, and not just a light snow, but massive, wet flakes. As we got onto the Autobahn, the road started getting covered really fast which we weren't too worried about. After about 30 minutes though we begin to get stuck behind this massive line of cars just barely dragging forward. At first we were confused, but eventually noticed the two massive snow plows at the front of the line, holding all of us back. We sat in this line for probably 20-30 minutes. Finally the plows turned off and we were back up to normal speed, or at least as fast as a 9 passenger van can go on the snow covered highway. After about an hour, we ran into another line of traffic, but this one was completely stopped. We parked the car and a couple people got out to go ask another car what the deal was, and of course, a crash. Elder Noble who was with us decided that we might as well do something. We hopped out of the van and began knocking on peoples doors and singing Christmas carols which brought lots of laughs and smiles for them and us. We were able to give out a Book of Mormon and got a couple peoples numbers. We were so hyped and wanted to go talk to more people but had given out the only Book of Mormon that we had on hand. And the next best thing that we had with us you might ask? A box of leftover bananas from zone conference! So there we were, 4 teenagers in white shirts, 11:30 at night, on the slush and snow covered highway, singing Jingle Bells, giving out slightly brown bananas to random families and truckers. Did we get home at 2am? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. It was one of those mission experiences that I have dreamed about and will remember for the rest of my life. It showed to me more than anything else that small acts of spontaneous kindness go a long, long way. I'm grateful that I get to be serving and sharing Christs light here in Germany, even if it is through a banana.
Have a great week everyone! Feel free to reach of if you ever have questions or anything, I'd love to hear from you!
Bis nächste Woche!
